Nicotine Replacement Therapy

When it comes to the development of significant chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and chronic lung disease, smoking is one of the elements that, more than any other, contributes to the development of these conditions.

A third of all cancer deaths are linked to tobacco use, with lung cancer accounting for more than ninety percent of all cancer deaths. In addition, 25 percent of occurrences of acute myocardial infarction and nearly half of all strokes are linked to the use of tobacco products.

The decision to quit smoking is a good one, but no one ever claims that it is simple. Therefore, in addition to maintaining their commitment, former smokers require support from their families, as well as assistance from medical professionals and therapists. This is the situation in which Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) comes into its own as an effective treatment option.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy: do you know what it is and how to replace it?

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can be administered in the form of chewing gum, transdermal patches, or tablets. Its purpose is to assist smokers in alleviating the range of emotions that are typically associated with the withdrawal process. These emotions include annoyance, restlessness, irritation, and even sadness.

It is possible that the use of these drugs, in conjunction with a treatment program, can boost the likelihood of successfully overcoming an addiction.

Lozenges are recommended for use during times of craving since they provide quick relief from the need to smoke. In contrast, patches are a form of release that is both gradual and consistent for a period of twenty-four hours.

The nicotine that is found in cigarettes can be replaced with nicotine found in nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), which has the added benefit of not containing the numerous harmful chemicals that are included in cigarettes.

Nicotine is delivered to the brain by each of these pharmaceutical formulations; however, the effects of nicotine are not as immediate as those of cigarettes. When it comes to the potential for addiction, the rate at which a substance reaches the brain is a significant factor. In light of this, only a very small percentage of persons are capable of developing a dependency on nicotine replacement drugs.

Nicotine replacement treatment, which often consists of rapid-release lozenges to provide relief during cravings and slow-release patches, is a strategy that has the potential to increase the likelihood of stopping smoking for an extended period by a factor of two.

Types of Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Several NRT products are available, each suited to different preferences and levels of nicotine dependence. The most common forms include:

Nicotine Patches:
These are adhesive patches worn on the skin that release a steady dose of nicotine over 16 to 24 hours. They are easy to use and help maintain a constant level of nicotine in the bloodstream, reducing the urge to smoke throughout the day. Patches are available in different strengths, allowing users to gradually decrease their nicotine intake over time.
Nicotine Gum:
Nicotine gum provides a quick dose of nicotine to relieve cravings and is available in different flavors and strengths. When cravings arise, the gum is chewed slowly to release the nicotine. It can be a good option for those who need flexible and immediate relief throughout the day.
Nicotine Lozenges:
Similar to gum, lozenges dissolve in the mouth, releasing nicotine gradually. They are suitable for people who prefer not to chew gum and can be used discreetly, making them a convenient choice for managing cravings on the go.
Nicotine Inhalers:
Nicotine inhalers mimic the hand-to-mouth action of smoking, which can help address the behavioral component of addiction. The inhaler delivers a low dose of nicotine through a mouthpiece, allowing users to manage cravings while maintaining some of the familiar habits associated with smoking.
Nicotine Nasal Sprays:
Nasal sprays deliver nicotine quickly through the nasal passages, making them suitable for heavy smokers who need fast-acting relief. Although some people find the sensation of the nasal spray uncomfortable, it can be particularly effective for those with intense cravings.

What are the criteria for using NRT?

By the International Council on Nicotine Abuse (INCA), the criteria for the utilization of pharmacotherapy, which includes the prescription of medication, must be by the level of physical dependence on nicotine. And they are:

1. Heavy smokers are defined as individuals who smoke twenty cigarettes or more on a daily basis.

People who smoke at least ten cigarettes per day and who smoke their first cigarette within the first thirty minutes of getting up are considered to be smokers.

Those who smoke and have a Fagerstrom test score equal to or greater than 5 or individuals who have undergone individual evaluation at the expert's discretion.

4. People who have tried to quit smoking in the past using simply the cognitive-behavioral method, yet in the past they have been unsuccessful owing to withdrawal symptoms.

5. There are no clinical signs that should be avoided.

Fagerström test

The objective of the Fagerstrom Test is to measure the degree to which an individual is dependent on nicotine. This level of reliance should be measured for every smoker because it is this dependence that makes the process of abstinence difficult and generates uncomfortable sensations in persons who are attempting to quit smoking.

NRT increases chances of quitting addiction

Evidence suggests that all kinds of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) boost the chances of success for persons who are attempting to stop smoking by between fifty percent and seventy percent, according to a study of one hundred fifty research that encompassed fifty thousand individuals in the primary analysis.

The type of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) that is utilized can have a variety of adverse effects, including irritation of the mouth or skin, according to studies.

Treatment with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) can last anywhere from eight to twelve weeks, and the duration of treatment can be extended at the discretion of the attending physician.
